Bedding Terminology Deciphered: Comforters, Duvets, Quilts, and Blankets

What you sleep in makes all the difference. Sleeping better is easier with the right bedding – it’s an investment that pays off! It might be difficult to discern between the various kinds of bedding at first glance, but they all serve different purposes. The world of bedding has many options to make your dreams come true – whether you are going for utilitarian or stylish, simple or ornate.

This article will explore the differences between four of the most common kinds of bedding options available in the market, namely duvets, comforters, quilts, and blankets. For each type of bedding, there are several options that you can choose from which are designed to offer you a greater level of comfort and style.

The Bedding Guide for Your Dream Bedroom

Making sure your bedroom is the perfect sanctuary for you is a priority. Creating the ultimate sleep space starts with your bed – and there is a wide variety of possibilities to make it the focal point. Here are some of the terms associated with bedding to help guide you during your next shopping trip.

Comforters

Designed to provide warmth, a comforter is a soft, fluffy bedding item that can be draped over your bed to add a luxurious touch of coziness. Generally, comforters are filled with either down or synthetic fiber filling, and quilted or stitched to keep the filling in place and evenly distributed. From having a cotton cover fabric with a high thread count to featuring a durable synthetic fabric cover, a down comforter will leave you feeling soft, warm, and relaxed the moment you touch it. Natural down comforters are among the most popular and comfortable bedding options. With down fill’s natural warmth and softness, you can enjoy superior breathability, exceptional loft, comfort, and excellent insulation that keeps you cool during hot summer nights and warm during winter months.

Unlike a duvet, a comforter is a single piece of bedding. It is intended to be layered on top of your sheets, and when decorated in coordinated duvet covers that align with your bedroom color scheme, comforters can actually elevate the aesthetics of your abode.

Duvets

The duvet is a popular type of bedding that usually includes a duvet insert and a duvet cover. Essentially, duvet inserts are soft and plush bags filled with either down, feathers, cotton, or synthetic alternatives. In addition, duvets usually come with a cover, available in all kinds of colors and patterns, or an encasement that protects the insert from spills and dirt.

Both duvet inserts and comforters are similar in terms of use, but comforters can be used without duvet covers. In contrast, duvet inserts generally come in solid colors and are plain, so a duvet cover is essential when using them. Duvet inserts are lined with a soft, insulating material, providing you with a comfortable layer of warmth. The lofty construction of heavenly duvet inserts or down duvet inserts allows them to be exceptionally light and extremely breathable.

Quilts

The perfect balance of artistry and comfort, quilting is a form of sewing that involves creating patterns with various layers. Quilts primarily have three layers; top, inner batting, and bottom. The top layer of this traditional bedding is made by sewing together various fabrics in bright colors, often called a patchwork quilt. The warmth of the quilt comes from the thick, fluffy middle layer, also known as batting, or wadding, which is usually made from wool, down, cotton, or polyester. The base fabric is similar to the strips of fabric used for the top layer.

All three of these layers are stitched together through a process called quilting, making them one whole piece of fabric. Quilts have central padding that is stitched in place by colored threads of embroidery made in different patterns and designs. Generally, modern quilts are made with cotton or cotton blends or other breathable fabrics; they are lightweight, making them ideal as toppers in the summer or as complements for winter weighted blankets.

Blankets

A blanket is a timeless piece of bedding that serves the same purpose it did hundreds of years ago: to protect you from cold drafts and keep you warm. A blanket is a rectangular piece of fabric that is made up of one layer with bound edges and is used as a warm cover. Blankets exist in a variety of fabrics. Wool, linen, fleece, cashmere, or silk can be used as blankets for insulation and decoration. A soft blanket comes in a wide variety of thicknesses and sizes.

Blankets are the ultimate in luxury and comfort. Their beautiful designs come in a range of colors and they can be used as a singular throw or draped over a bed for extra warmth. Blankets are a must-have to add some style to your space and enhance your comfort while reading a book or just relaxing.
