FAQ
Are down and feathers in this down comforter ethically sourced?
Yes, the down and feathers in this comforter are certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). This voluntary global certification ensures that the materials are sourced from animals that have been treated humanely and not subjected to unnecessary harm.
How do I choose the right size down comforter for my bed?
Start by measuring the width and length of your mattress. Comforters are typically sized to match standard mattress dimensions—twin, full, queen, king, and California king. For the best coverage and a more luxurious drape, consider choosing a comforter that matches or slightly exceeds your mattress size.
How do I clean my down comforter?
- Check the label first: If it says dry clean only, skip the washer and take it to a pro who knows how to handle down.
- Give it a quick check: Fix any small holes or loose seams before cleaning so feathers don’t sneak out.
- If it’s machine washable: Use a big washer, gentle cycle, and a mild detergent.
- Dry it all the way: Tumble dry on low with dryer balls (or clean tennis balls) and fluff it up a few times. Make sure it’s completely dry so it stays fresh and fluffy.
- Day-to-day care: Use a duvet cover, let it air out once in a while, and store it in a breathable bag (not plastic) when you’re not using it.
How often should I wash my down comforter?
Down comforters require minimal washing—typically just once or twice a year. Using a comforter cover helps keep it clean and extends the time between washes.
I see dark spots inside my down comforter. Is it defective?
Not at all. The dark spots you may notice through the white fabric are naturally occurring black or gray down and feathers. These are completely normal and safe. We choose not to use chemical decolorizers, opting instead to limit darker feathers to about 1% for a more natural and healthy product.
Why does my down bedding have a scent?
A light scent is completely natural — it comes from the tiny amount of natural oils in down that keep it soft, fluffy, and resilient. Even the cleanest, high-quality down can carry a faint odor, which some people notice more if they have a sensitive sense of smell. The scent can seem stronger right after opening the packaging, and warmth, humidity, or lingering moisture can also make it more noticeable.
At Puredown, all of our down is thoroughly cleaned and certified by RDS, ensuring it’s safe, hygienic, and free from harmful chemicals. We never use heavy chemical treatments to cover the natural scent, so you can enjoy a healthier and more natural product.
The scent will fade with time and use. To freshen your comforter, simply air it out in a sunny, breezy spot for a few hours. If you’d like to speed things up, you can tumble dry it on low heat for a short cycle to let fresh air circulate through the fill.
